Electrical – Project Engineer

Purpose of Position

This is an experienced position involved in non-routine and complex assignments. The Project Engineer works with the Project Manager(s) to develop design concepts incorporated into the final product by Staff Designers and Engineers. The Project Engineer, in the role of project leader, may be asked to handle some project management and business development tasks but will primarily work on technical aspects of project development.

The ability to work on several projects at once and to continuously reprioritize work is critical in this position.

 Relationship to Others

Reports to the MEP Group Leader and works directly for the various Project Managers according to assignment under minimal supervision. May be assigned to perform as project leader. Helps mentor and develop junior staff. Client contact and contractor coordination is expected of Project Engineers for project review. Moderate amount of communication with the project construction team to minimize misunderstanding and conflicts and should be skilled in promoting coordination and cooperation of the in-house and outside project team members.

 Limits of Authority

Project Engineers have authority to perform complex design duties under the direction of the Engineer of Record. These individuals may not change the scope of work or deviate from any other part of the contractual document without Project Manager approval.  Project Engineers are expected to coordinate work of the staff within the project team.

Typical Duties

• Providing schematic design information to Project Manager
• Producing sketches and system schematics for complicated design tasks
• Preparing and delegating preliminary task lists
• Incorporating design concepts from schematic design into design development and working with project team to produce construction documents
• Coordinating design clearances with other design professionals
• Selecting details that will be used on the project
• Documenting existing conditions and perform some troubleshooting of existing installations and designs
• Editing construction specification sections
• Attending construction meetings and producing site observation reports, traveling when required
• Producing final punch lists
• Researching non-routine code issues and obtain interpretations from code officials
• Preparing addendums and change orders. Initiating additional service requests and turn over to Project Manager for submittal to client
• Preparing opinions of probable cost for materials and systems and reviewing contractor cost estimates
• Providing value engineering
• Putting own work through the quality control review process
• Reviewing work of project design team. Checking progress of work and alerting Project Manager to change of scope or additional services
• Effectively responding to comments from review authorities
• In role of project leader, coordinating staff activities to achieve goals of project budget, schedule, and quality
• Assisting in the education and development of design staff and act as resource for design questions
• Using computer programs and spreadsheets for engineering analysis and presentations
• Maintaining neat and organized work area that allows efficient access to project information required by other team members.

Knowledge and Experience

Requirements include:

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited Engineering program
• Completion of Professional Engineering License exam is Required
• United States Citizenship Required
• Minimum of 4 years previous design experience
• Understanding and knowledge of current applicable codes
• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
• Strong knowledge of AutoCAD
• Working knowledge of Revit/BIM
• Working understanding of review authorities and how to effectively respond to comments
• Strong knowledge of MS Office

Preference will be given to Candidates with:

• 2+ years of professional experience in consulting engineering design
• SKM Calculation experience
• Visual Lighting Calculation experience
• Project Management experience
• Proposal preparation experience
