AVI is a 13,000 square foot laser eye surgery center in the New Town area.
By using traditional materials and proportions with modern forms and finishes, DJG’s architectural design for the building blends the Client’s image as a cutting-edge provider of high-tech medicine with the traditionally-oriented requirements of the New Town architectural guidelines. DJG worked closely with AVI and James City County planning officials to bring these concepts together and help AVI be a “good neighbor” to future New Town buildings.
Inside, the building’s design unfolds to reveal its hidden secret: A contemporary glass and steel clerestory that runs from the front entrance along a central hallway and into a large central waiting lounge, bathing the building interior in natural light. Flanking the central lounge are twin nurse stations controlling banks of exam rooms on both sides, with the surgery suites to the rear of the building, and the retail and administrative functions in the front. DJG’s responsibilities also included design of the building’s site, civil, landscaping, structural, HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems.
