DJG recently completed the design and construction administration for a new 11,200 sf public safety facility for the Pantops District of Albemarle County. The station has 2 apparatus bays with supporting spaces for turnout gear, decontamination, storage, and a mechanical mezzanine. The living area of the facility consists of a full kitchen, day room, office spaces, bunk rooms, a fitness room, and men’s and women’s locker rooms, restrooms, and showers. At the rear of the facility, there is an attached maintenance space that includes a vehicle bay, single office, restroom, and shower.
The exterior cladding of the facility consists of a mix of brick veneer and EIFS (exterior insulation finish system) along with prefinished aluminum windows, hollow metal and aluminum storefront personnel doors, sectional overhead doors, and asphalt shingle roofing. The main entrance to the facility is designated by a small entrance canopy finished with two prefinished aluminum column surrounds, standing seam metal roofing, and prefinished metal trim.
Site work included relocating the facility’s access road approximately 60’ away from the adjacent intersection to allow for maneuvering of emergency vehicles. The site’s stormwater solution includes accommodating the pass-through of discharge from an adjacent existing 2+ acre retention pond. Three bioretention areas were created on-site to filter sediment and pollutants from the new road and parking lot runoff and comply with the state’s water quality control requirements.
