DJG provided architecture and engineering services as part of a design/build team to create a new 9,900 sf fire and rescue station for New Kent County, VA.
The station has three drive-through apparatus bays situated next to the administrative and residential portion of the building. The interior spaces include 6 private bunk rooms, a spacious three shift residential kitchen, day room, gear turnout room, decontamination area, locker rooms, private restrooms and showers, private offices, exercise room and training room. In addition, there is controlled access between the public spaces and the fire personnel private areas.
DJG worked closely with Henderson Inc and their sub-consultants to provide a design that stayed within the design/build contract amount. DJG and Henderson had bi-weekly meetings with New Kent County and the Fire Chief to identify any design or budget issues and to develop solutions that would work for all parties involved.
Because the budget was very important, and always is, the design and construction team were able to develop economical ways to provide the aesthetics for the pre-engineered metal building. We provided a brick masonry water table and cementitious siding on the three visible sides of the building, leaving the unseen rear of the building with the standard metal wall panels. We also incorporated masonry pilasters to accent elements of the fire station. In the interior we used hardy finishes to withstand the rigors of daily life at a fire station. We utilized accent color on the walls to add character and durable aesthetic floor finishes to provide a sense of home for the fire men and women.
A very spacious mechanical platform over the living quarters was created for ease of maintenance and future repairs, as well as allow fire and rescue training from the apparatus bay. In the event of future HVAC replacement, double doors into the apparatus bay allow for the equipment to be easily removed and new equipment to be installed.
